GMMCO has successfully executed first developmental order for ICF Chennai involving supply, installation and commissioning of 1st lot of 2 nos. of 3508B engines for Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) locomotive application on 18th of this month. The Flag off function of the DEMU was conducted by Mr. Ashok Agarwal, General Manager ICF Chennai along with Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Chief Mechanical Engineer ICF and other senior officials of ICF, in presence of Mr. H.Jayaram MD & CEO,GMMCO Ltd,Mr. Ravisekhar COO PSG GMMCO limited and Mr.Chuck Wills, VP -International Market Development – Rail, Caterpillar Energy and Transportation.

These are Diesel Power Cars for passenger locos application being deployed for running shorter distance upto a maximum of 200 kms. The supply of the Diesel Power Cars with CAT engines, has helped Indian Railways to have a new vendor with world class CAT engines.

This is a breakthrough order with Indian Railways for Caterpillar after a gap of 14 years . Gmmco worked with ICF, Indian Railway Board & RDSO for over 2 years to get the engine tested and accepted for loco application meeting Indian Railway specification. Testing included 100hours load trials at Caterpillar Hosur facilities which the engine passed with flying colors. Indian Railway team truly appreciated the technical advantages of Cat 3508 engine and lower footprint and maintenance cost benefits that will accrue in the longer run.

GMMCO Project team has carried out Design and Engineering of accessories and auxiliary systems for this package like Radiator, Ventilation System, Variable speed Hydraulic System, Air Compressor, Base Frame, Loco control etc, .All these components have been sourced through Local suppliers.

With this success, CIPL Hosur has become an approved vendor for supply of CAT 3508B for 1400 HP DEMU application. Backed by the success of this order, Gmmco already has secured another order from Indian Railway for 12 units of 3512C for 1600 HP DEMU application.

Given the focus Indian Railway is giving for DEMUs , upgrading to 2200 HP for higher speed DEMUs and privatization plan on the anvil , Caterpillar engines are back in the reckoning and chance to be part of Indian Railway modernization drive in the years to come.
