Dreams Faded, Strength Found at Gmmco

Bimal Kumar
Dreams Faded, Strength Found at Gmmco

Some lives are written in golden ink, their stories celebrated even before they unfold. But some lives are carved in silence, in unseen sacrifices and struggles, in love that asks for nothing in return - and that’s what the life of Mr. Bimal Kumar looked like.
Bimal was born into a world where dreams had to wait for their turn, where childhood came
second to responsibilities. In the quiet town of Kathara, nestled in the coal belt of Jharkhand, life was measured not in luxuries, but in sacrifices his parents made.
I didn’t choose engineering because I understood machines - I chose it because I understood struggle.
It was never about ambition; it was about survival. About making sure that one day, my father’s sacrifices wouldn’t be in vain.

But dreams are fragile, and sometimes they break quietly, without a sound, but with an everlasting deafening silence. The IIT dream slipped through his fingers, leaving behind nothing but the echo of late-night study sessions. He picked up the pieces, brushed off the disappointment, and stepped into mechanical engineering - not as a second choice, but as the only choice left.
He didn’t walk into his future with excitement, but with determination, because that was how life had always been for him - never easy, never perfect, but always moving forward. That is because when life closes a door for people like Bimal, they don’t just look for another door or window. They build their own!
Life, it throws punches, doesn’t it?
And when those punches landed, it wasn’t just my family that held me up; it was them. They became my shield, my strength.

For thirty-two years, he’s walked through those doors. Every morning, the same feeling not dread, not duty, but a feeling of home. For Bimal, work is a place where he feels at peace. A place where he belongs. A place where, through it all, he found a family - the Gmmco family!
They say work is just work, a way to pay one’s bills. But for Bimal... Gmmco, it was different. It was a heartbeat, a warmth in a world that often felt cold. It wasn’t just a job; it was...family. A family he didn’t expect, a family he didn’t even know he needed. When his father was in a hospital in Mumbai...the sterile white walls brought about a fear that clung to the air like a shroud. But then, Gmmco was there. Not just a call, not just a card. They were there. He sat by his father’s bedside, while paperwork piled up on the table, and no one questioned him. No one asked if he was on leave. They simply...understood.

If you ask Bimal about his wife, he won’t offer you a long story. He’ll just smile, a quiet warmth in his eyes, and say, “We’ve never fought, not even once.” And perhaps, that’s all you really need to know. It’s the kind of love that doesn’t need shouted out loud to be heard.
If Bimal is strong today, it’s because of her. If you watch closely, you’ll see it in the way his eyes soften when her name is spoken, in the quiet reverence of his gaze. This love, this beautiful bond, is his life, his very soul. And for this love, he dedicates these beautiful words of the song written by Mr. Santosh Anand – ‘Ek pyar ka nagma hai, maujon ki ravani hai...’
We’ve never fought, not even once.

Not many know that Bimal’s heart beats to a rhythm beyond machines and mining. Music flows in his blood - his maternal grandfather, a Sangeet Ratna Upadhi awardee, had once filled their home with melodies. In another world, in another time, Bimal might have been a musician, lost in the beats of a tabla or the strings of a sitar.
Years later, when his own children showed an interest in music, he made sure they got what he never could - a chance to learn. Their mornings begin with bhajans, their home echoes with harmonium and music. He may have let go of his own musical dreams, but in them, he sees a small part of that dream still alive.
The son who taught him strength - Bimal’s biggest challenge arrived in the form of his greatest blessing - his son. Sixteen months, and the world tilted on its axis. A seizure, a rush to the hospital, the hushed whispers of doctors, words that tore the very fabric of his soul: ‘He won’t survive.’ How do you breathe when the air is thick with the unspoken sentence of a child’s fate? “But my son refused to surrender. He clung to life and fought like a warrior. His survival taught me what true strength and patience meant.” But where most saw limitations, Bimal and his wife saw possibilities. “He finished school, got his MBA from IIM Ranchi, and now he works in HR. Each step he took was a silent message to the world, “Everybody said I couldn’t? Watch me.”

“If my son was strength, then my daughter, was pure fire. She didn’t just dream big, but dreamt of touching the skies. A fighter pilot in the Air Force, nothing less. Imagine that. My little girl, soaring above the clouds.” She faced every challenge head on, like a warrior. She came so close to tasting victory that Bimal almost saw her in that uniform. But sadly life has a way of shattering even the most beautiful dreams, as it did with this one. But she didn’t allow this to stop her. She was ambitious, determined, and with the same unshaken spirit, chose a different path.
Bimal watches her, just as he watches his son. They are different, yet very similar. Both carrying his quiet determination, both writing their own stories, in their own way. Well sometimes, the strongest people are the ones who have had to fight the hardest for things others take for granted. And it’s true. Isn’t it?
If my family is my left hand, Gmmco is my right.

Now Bimal dreams of quiet days with his wife. Of seeing his children settled and happy. Of visiting temples, of listening to more music, of finding the kind of peace he never had time for. It’s a story of a man who never stopped moving forward. And maybe, just maybe, it’s a story that reminds us that success isn’t about how far you go - it’s about who stands beside you when you get there. And in that, Bimal Kumar has already won.
