In conversation with V Chandrashekar, Managing Director, GMMCO.

As India accelerates its infrastructure and industrial development, how do you see GMMCO contributing to the country’s nation-building journey?

India is entering an important phase of growth, with infrastructure, mining, energy and industrial development playing an increasingly significant role in shaping economic progress. The scale of opportunity is immense, but expectations from customers are also evolving. Today, they are looking beyond equipment alone. They need higher productivity, stronger equipment availability, predictable operating costs and partners who can support them throughout the lifecycle of an asset.

At GMMCO, this is the transformation we have been steadily driving — from being a traditional equipment supplier to becoming a comprehensive, holistic solutions provider. Our role begins with understanding the customer’s application, operating environment and business priorities, and then bringing together the right equipment, technology, financing, service support and lifecycle solutions to create measurable value.

Nation building ultimately happens at the project site — where roads are built, mines are developed, infrastructure is created and industries are powered. Every additional hour of uptime, every improvement in productivity and every efficiently maintained asset contributes to that larger outcome. We therefore see our responsibility not merely as supplying machines, but as helping customers achieve better project outcomes, improve asset utilisation and maximise value throughout the equipment lifecycle.

What were the key highlights for GMMCOCAT at bauma CONEXPO India 2026, and how is technology changing the customer proposition?

Bauma CONEXPO India provided an important platform to demonstrate how the industry itself is moving from a machine-centric approach towards integrated solutions.

GMMCOCAT showcased Caterpillar’s new Cat® 355 Hydraulic Excavator, Cat D5 Dozer and Cat 120 GC Motor Grader, addressing applications across quarrying, mining, heavy infrastructure and road construction. These machines bring together productivity, efficiency, ease of operation and a focus on lowering ownership costs.

However, for us, the larger story goes beyond the equipment. The right machine, when combined with application expertise and dependable support, can have a direct impact on project timelines, operating costs, utilisation and customer profitability.

The broader showcase also reflected how the customer proposition today extends to connected technologies, aftermarket services, financing, rental and used equipment, and lifecycle support.

Technology is an important enabler of this shift. Connected solutions such as Cat Product Link and VisionLink enable customers to monitor machine performance, enhance jobsite visibility and make better-informed operational decisions. At GMMCO, we are building on these capabilities through connected assets, digital inspections, condition monitoring and other digital initiatives. The objective is to use data and digitalisation to improve equipment availability, utilisation and productivity.

What will be GMMCO’s strategic focus over the next 12 to 18 months?

Our focus will be on strengthening customer relationships and expanding integrated equipment and lifecycle solutions across infrastructure, mining, energy and industrial sectors.

One of the most important shifts taking place in our industry is from a transactional relationship centred on the sale of equipment to a partnership built around outcomes. Customers increasingly expect a partner who understands their application, supports the equipment throughout its working life and remains focused on productivity and value long after commissioning. That is where GMMCO’s lifecycle capabilities become increasingly important.

Our focus will remain on helping customers increase productivity

At GMMCO, we believe customers are not renting equipment - they are investing in productivity.

Pankaj Zade, Head - Rental & Used Equipment, GMMCO

India's infrastructure expansion is creating not merely a requirement for more construction equipment, but a far greater need for better equipment utilization. The Union Budget 2026-27 has proposed public capital expenditure of ₹12.2 lakh crore, while 352 infrastructure projects worth over ₹16 lakh crore have already been evaluated under the PM GatiShakti Network Planning Group framework.

Highways, railways, Metro systems, airports, industrial corridors, ports, renewable energy projects and logistics parks are driving equipment demand across both metropolitan regions and emerging Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Against this backdrop, project owners and contractors are asking a fundamentally different question. The conversation has shifted from 'Which equipment should we purchase?' to 'How do we secure the right equipment, at the right location, for the right duration, with assured performance?' This shift is transforming equipment rental from a financial alternative into a strategic project-execution model.

Rental is no longer an alternative - it is a project strategy

Road construction continues to be a major contributor to rental demand, but today's infrastructure projects require far greater versatility. Metro rail, airports, ports, mining operations, renewable-energy projects and industrial developments often require specialized equipment only during specific construction phases.

Owning every machine required throughout the project lifecycle ties up valuable capital and frequently results in idle assets once a phase is completed. Organized rental enables contractors to deploy the right equipment exactly when required, scale capacity during peak execution, adapt the fleet as project needs evolve and return equipment once work is completed. The financial benefits extend well beyond avoiding capital expenditure. Rental transforms a significant upfront investment into a predictable operating expense while transferring responsibilities such as maintenance, repairs, storage, depreciation and asset disposal to the rental partner. This enables contractors to direct more capital towards project execution, manpower, materials and business growth.

This shift is clearly reflected in GMMCO Rentals' performance. The business has recorded a compound annual growth rate of nearly 36%, reinforcing the industry's transition towards rental as a strategic operating model rather than a temporary solution. With rental penetration in India's construction equipment industry still estimated at around 10%, organized rental has significant room for expansion as customers increasingly recognize its operational and financial advantages.

A machine delivers value only when it is operating efficiently, consistently and safely. That is why GMMCO Rentals provides far more than equipment availability. Every engagement is supported by an integrated ecosystem encompassing equipment selection, deployment planning, preventive maintenance, field service, genuine parts availability and machine-health monitoring.

Strategically located rental hubs, mobile service teams and localized technical support enable faster response times across project locations. Most work orders prioritize new or young machines, providing customers access to a modern fleet with higher reliability, improved productivity and lower downtime. A dedicated customer-support line further enables rapid technical coordination, particularly for equipment operating in remote project sites.

The rental fleet includes motor graders, wheel loaders, excavators, dozers and backhoe loaders serving applications ranging from highways and site development to mining, quarrying, material handling and industrial operations. GMMCO has also supported customers across ports, iron ore and coal mining projects, airport developments and temporary power applications through a fleet of more than 100 maintained generator sets.

Digital technologies are redefining organized rental. GMMCO Rentals' Rental Management System provides real-time visibility into fleet availability, enabling faster deployment decisions and improved asset utilization. Once equipment is commissioned, telematics, GPS connectivity and remote monitoring continuously generate insights into operating hours, utilization, fuel efficiency, machine location and equipment health.

This enables maintenance to become predictive rather than reactive. Potential issues can be identified well before failures occur, allowing service teams to schedule maintenance proactively and significantly reduce unplanned downtime.

The benefits extend beyond maintenance. Utilization data helps minimize unnecessary idling, location tracking improves fleet redeployment, while machine-health alerts reduce the likelihood of secondary component failures. Maintenance schedules can also be synchronized with customer work plans, minimizing operational disruption. Performance information can additionally be shared remotely with agencies such as NHAI, improving project monitoring and reporting.

GMMCO's broader digital ecosystem further strengthens equipment performance through solutions such as VisionLink® for machine monitoring, S-O-S Fluid Analysis for early detection of component wear and CAT Inspect for structured digital inspections.

Material Handling 2.0: Gmmco enabling connected productivity with Cat excavators and integrated solutions

India’s construction equipment (CE) rental market is undergoing a fundamental shift—from a fragmented, transactional ecosystem to a more structured, solution-driven model. This transformation is closely linked to the country’s accelerated infrastructure and energy push, alongside evolving financial realities for contractors.

At Gmmco, we see this shift not just as market evolution, but as a response to deeper structural changes in how projects are bid, financed, and executed. Rental today is no longer about temporary access to equipment— it is about enabling project efficiency, flexibility, and financial sustainability.

Enabling Smarter Project Execution through Rental Models

One of the most defining shifts in the industry has been in bidding dynamics. Competitive intensity in infrastructure projects has increased sharply, with contractors often bidding 30–40% lower—at times even at negative margins—to secure projects. This has placed significant pressure on profitability, compelling contractors to rethink how capital is deployed.

At the same time, the evolving nature of work—ranging from short-duration mining contracts to specialized infrastructure such as roads, metro rail, irrigation, and pumped storage projects— demands greater flexibility in equipment deployment and execution timelines.

In this context, ownership-heavy models are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain. Rental, therefore, emerges as a practical and strategic alternative. By reducing upfront capital commitments and enhancing financial agility, it enables contractors to respond effectively to dynamic project requirements while navigating uncertain project economics.

India’s Maritime Growth: A Sector at an Inflection Point

With expanding defence fleets, port infrastructure, increasing offshore activity and a renewed focus on indigenous shipbuilding, the scale of opportunity is significant in the maritime sector but so is the complexity.

As this evolution unfolds, expectations from marine power systems are shifting decisively. The industry is moving beyond standalone equipment towards integrated, resilient and mission-critical solutions—designed not just to perform, but to adapt to increasingly dynamic operational and energy environments.

Evolving Expectations: Redefining Marine Power Systems

Modern vessels—across defence, offshore and commercial applications—are becoming more advanced, interconnected and performance-driven. This is driving multiple structural and fundamental shifts.

The first is a move from main equipment to integrated systems, where propulsion, auxiliary power and control systems must function as a unified, intelligent ecosystem.

The second is a shift from performance to lifecycle value, where uptime, maintainability and cost optimisation are as critical as output.

The third is the transition from standardisation to customisation, with solutions increasingly engineered around specific mission profiles and operating conditions.

In parallel, evolving fuel and emission norms are adding a new dimension to marine power system design. Increasing regulatory focus is driving the adoption of cleaner fuels, advanced after-treatment technologies such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and hybrid solutions—requiring systems to balance compliance with performance, efficiency and operational flexibility. Together, these shifts are redefining what it takes to deliver effective marine power solutions.

Defence Programs: Where Standards Are Defined

Nowhere are these expectations more rigorously tested than in naval applications. In such environments, reliability is absolute, compliance is stringent and performance must be consistent under the most demanding conditions. Defence programs, therefore, do not just reflect industry standards—they define them.

Gmmco Marine’s role in the Diving Support Vessels (DSVs) project for the Indian Navy

is a case in point. To meet the shipyard’s requirement for a Propulsion System Supplier and Integrator (PSS&I), Gmmco delivered fully integrated propulsion and power solutions, including high-capacity Cat® DG sets of 2000 ekW and 3000 ekW units.

The project required adherence to stringent standards such as DEFSTAND, MIL standards, EMI/EMC compliance in line with applicable MIL standards, JSS55555 and Navy policy letters for stringent transient performance of diesel alternators—underscoring the level of engineering precision and execution discipline required. Leveraging Caterpillar’s proven technology, the propulsion system was fully designed, integrated and engineered in-house.

Subsequent engagements across projects such as Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs), Cadet Training Ships (CTSs), Retrofit projects for the Navy frigate and Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs)

further reinforce a broader shift from vendors supplying components to partners owning system-level outcomes.

From Complexity to Capability: Delivering at Scale

The demands of marine—particularly in defence—represent some of the most complex and exacting requirements for any power system. It is within this environment that true engineering capability is both tested and proven.

Delivering this level of precision consistently—and at scale—requires more than domain expertise; it demands the ability to operate seamlessly across systems, applications and industries. Gmmco’s strength lies in this integration. With capabilities spanning sectors such as oil & gas, data centres, industrial, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, manufacturing and mining,

Gmmco brings a cross-industry perspective that enables it to address power requirements holistically rather than in isolation.

This extends to hybrid energy solutions, where conventional power systems are integrated with Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). It also includes emission-compliant configurations with advanced after-treatment solutions—enabling greater efficiency, flexibility and resilience while supporting regulatory compliance in complex operating environments.

Backed by Gmmco’s legacy of engineering excellence, customer support and long-standing partnership with Caterpillar, Gmmco Marine reflects the company’s larger commitment to enabling progress through dependable, future-ready solutions. Organisations that can deliver reliably in the most demanding environments—while adapting to changing energy dynamics—will shape the future of maritime operations and the broader industrial ecosystem.

Powering India’s Maritime Evolution

The construction and mining equipment industry is undergoing a fundamental shift. What was once seen as a traditionally male-dominated sector is steadily evolving into a more inclusive, capability-driven ecosystem - and women are playing a critical role in this transformation.

At Gmmco, this change is not limited to representation - it is visible in the nature and depth of roles women are taking on.

Women today are contributing across the value chain - from engineering and technical services to marketing, digital transformation, and leadership. More importantly, their presence is expanding into core operational environments that were once considered unconventional.

At Gmmco, women are actively working across:

On-ground roles at mining and construction sites

Customer-facing technical and service functions

This marks a decisive shift in the industry - from role limitation to role expansion based on capability.

Over the last three years, Gmmco has seen a 17% growth in women representation, with increasing participation not just in corporate roles, but across technical, operational, and leadership functions. This shift reflects a broader industry movement where performance, skill, and adaptability are becoming the defining factors - rather than traditional role perceptions.

FROM INCLUSION TO INTEGRATION: BUILDING A FUTURE-READY WORKFORCE

For organisations in this sector, diversity is no longer an initiative - it is becoming a business imperative.

At Gmmco, the focus has been on integrating women meaningfully into the workforce, rather than limiting inclusion to intent. This includes expanding access to roles across the lifecycle - from early talent pipelines to leadership positions - and ensuring that opportunities are aligned with capability and aspiration.

Efforts are also being directed towards creating visibility for women in technical and operational roles, which is critical in reshaping industry perception. When women are seen not just in offices, but also in workshops, warehouses, and mining sites, it begins to redefine what the industry represents.

Equally important is enabling continuous learning and leadership development, ensuring that women are not just entering the workforce, but are also equipped to grow and lead within it.

ADDRESSING STRUCTURAL AND PERCEPTION BARRIERS

Despite progress, certain barriers continue to exist - both structural and perceptual.

The industry is often viewed as physically intensive and site-driven, which can discourage women from exploring opportunities in this space. Limited early exposure, coupled with traditional mindsets, further reinforces this perception.

Additionally, infrastructure and workplace design - especially in remote or site-based environments - have historically not been built with inclusivity in mind.

Addressing these challenges requires a deliberate and sustained approach:

Reframing the narrative of the industry to highlight diverse career pathways

Designing inclusive work environments across sites, workshops, and operational locations

Creating visible role models who can inspire the next generation

Building strong mentorship ecosystems to support long-term career growth

At Gmmco, the effort is to move beyond incremental change and work towards systemic inclusion, where opportunities are defined by capability and not constrained by legacy perceptions.

THE OPPORTUNITY AHEAD: TECHNOLOGY AS AN EQUALISER

One of the most significant enablers of change in the industry is technology.

Connected equipment and data-driven systems

Automation and advanced machine technologies

The nature of work is rapidly shifting from being physically intensive to skill- and knowledge-driven. This transition is creating a more level playing field and opening up new opportunities for women across roles - particularly in areas such as diagnostics, analytics, machine performance monitoring, and digital solutions.

As the industry continues to evolve, the ability to adapt, analyse and innovate will be far more critical than physical intensity - making it inherently more inclusive.

The next decade will be pivotal for the construction and mining equipment sector. As infrastructure demand grows and technology continues to reshape operations, the industry will require a workforce that is diverse, agile, and future-ready.

Women will play a central role in this transformation - not just as participants, but as contributors to innovation, operational excellence, and customer-centric solutions.

At Gmmco, the focus is on building an organisation where diversity is not an outcome, but a core strength embedded in the way we work.

Because the future of this industry will not be defined by who has traditionally been part of it - but by who is ready to shape it.

At Gmmco, women are not just breaking barriers - they are redefining them.
